I am an associate lecturer at Newcastle University and an academic tutor at Sunderland University. I also teach science communication at Newcastle Medical School and the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University.
My academic interests lie in developing new methods of practising and teaching journalism, and in the wider dissemination of journalism skills and media literacy among the general population.
I help run the twice-yearly Pop-Up News project which links journalism students in Newcastle, Chennai, Los Angeles and other centres around the world in a live 24-hour mobile news reporting exercise using smartphones.
I am a member of the Association for Journalism Education, a fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and an associate of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture, University of Southern California.
